Following his parents' divorce, Denji and his older sister Rui lived with their father Soejima Daisuke. Rui's rebellious nature left Denji with the burden of inheriting their father's full ghost hunting legacy.
When Denji turned 15, Rui pulled him out of the house to travel the country, which is shorthand for "she kidnapped him and drove him around with a frightening number of fake identities for the both of them to escape their father's notice." A terrible bleach job on his hair and several burner phones later, he slipped back into the ghost hunting scene under a new alias every other week. He and Rui were both acutely aware this was a terrible idea, but as ghost hunting was the only life he'd ever known, he got really annoying when he was cooped up in a van and decidedly not fighting ghosts.
His legal name 副島 伝次 is a fairly common combination of characters for the Japanese pronunciation Soejima Denji.
The alternate character set 副島 鷏鏃 was created by his novelist aunt and mother for fun. In Japanese, it's also pronounced Soejima Denji.
