Castel was born and raised in Cinca, Centinela during the tail end of a military junta. While he was too young to remember the clandestine military operation that razed large portions of his hometown, the effects were still clear in his community for decades following. His elder brother disappeared when he was three, and his mother's volunteer work as an emergency medic left him in the care of his artistically inclined father for most of his childhood. He befriended his neighbor Nestor, and the two attended primary and secondary school in the neighboring state.
For the 2016-2017 school year, he followed Nestor to Night Raven College for tertiary school. He was placed in Pomefiore dorm and befriended his roommate Emyr, then had a falling-out with then-dorm-head Nestor, kickstarting the dorm vagrancy and vent-wandering he came to be known for over the rest of his tertiary career. By the end of the schoolyear, his conflict with Nestor resulted in Nestor's overblotting and subsequent murdering his parents, as well as Castel's own repeating first year.
Castel's second first year passed relatively peacefully as he made friends with more of the student body, including Joey, Qadan, and Alin. His second year saw Qadan's accident.
By his fourth year at NRC, Castel had built a reputation as a skilled alchemist. Against general convention, he chose to do his fourth year project at his tertiary school. His conflict with Nestor came to a head during winter break, forcing him to return to Cinca for the first time since he'd left for NRC.
He officially graduated NRC in 2021 and immediately began university that fall, earning his BS in 2023 and his MSc in 2025 (during which time he also married Qadan). Upon graduation, he returned to NRC as its magical pharmaceuticals professor and adopted his son Erden the next year.
